Using oracy in mathematics at Lawrence

Our children speak and listen through a series of strategies at Lawrence:

 

Rote: drilling of facts and ideas through repetition

 

Recitation: accumulation of knowledge through questions designed to stimulate recall

 

Instruction and exposition: telling our children what to do, or explaining facts and procedures

 

Discussion: the exchange of ideas with a focus on information sharing and problem-solving

 

Dialogue: achieving common understanding through structured, cumulative exchanges
