School of Sanctuary

We are a School of Sanctuary

We are very pleased to announce that we have been accredited as a School of Sanctuary! We are committed to ensuring that our children and their families, staff and the community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and the struggles asylum seekers and refugees face. We extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community.

Lawrence Primary is committed to being a welcoming and safe place for all. We are not just a sanctuary for those whose lives were in danger in their own country, but to any pupils who are experiencing difficulties at home or are just needing a place to feel secure and safe.

What is a School of Sanctuary?

A school of Sanctuary is a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal valued members of the school community. It is a school that is proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

Who helped us gain School of Sanctuary status?

Working towards becoming a School of Sanctuary involved the whole school:

  • Governors are fully supportive of our commitment to promote positive attitudes within our school.

  • Staff are delivering an excellent curriculum which supports this ethos and helps our children foster awareness and understanding of the cultural contexts within which they and others live.

We would welcome any suggestions or ideas parents may have as we continue our School of Sanctuary journey. Please contact Lisa Flanagan or Anne-Marie Young to discuss or for further details.
