Maths Time
Let's start today's Maths activity by counting in 10's, all the way to 100.

Well done! Today, at Maths time, we are going to solve problems using our halving skills to help us find the answer. We will solve the first problem for you, to show you what to do.
The first problem says "Sam made 4 yummy cupcakes. She gave half of them to her best friend. How many cakes did Sam and her friend get?".
First, we look for the number in the problem, and draw this amount of objects.
So, we will need to draw 4 cupcakes, like this:
Next, we need to halve this amount. So, draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper, and put half of the cupcakes on one side, and half of the cupcakes on the other side. Remember to say "1 for you, 1 for you" and share to make it fair .
Keep sharing, until all of the cakes have gone!
Then, we count how many cupcakes are on each side.
"1,2" "1,2" so, half of 4 is 2. Sam and her friend get 2 cupcakes each.
Now, its your turn, complete the task in your busy books.
1. Laura made 2 yummy cakes Her teacher ate half of them. How many cakes did Laura's teacher eat?
2. Harry made 6 delicious biscuits. His Granny ate half of them. How many cakes did Granny eat?
3. Josh had 8 sweeties. He gave half to his best friend. How many sweeties did Josh and his friend get?
Top Tip: Each time you share a cupcake, cross one of the cupcakes out, that you drew at the beginning of the activity, like in the example above.
Parents: This activity can be quite tricky, so your child may need more support to begin with.
