The season is coming to an end and there is lots of preparation to get the plot ready for winter to ensure a good start next season.

 

October allotment jobs:

Harvested: last of the potatoes including purple potatoes and last of the apples, baking and eating varieties. Red cabbage.

Cut down sunflowers and climbing beans.

Weeded : border under fruit trees and beds.

Planted: black tulip and allium bulbs in 3 large pots and some in herb bed.

Took bins of green waste to the tip.

Surveyed plot for things to order and replace for next season.

Sorted lots of seed packets for next season.

Planted some seeds: calendula, cornflower, poppy, cowslip and larkspur.

Cut down old tomato, cucumber and pepper plants in polytunnel and cleared.

Sweet corn was unfortunately eaten by mice.

Sprouts are doing well to be ready in winter time.

Green manure (phacelia and poached egg plant) growing and will be dug in to feed soil.

Lettuce and leeks growing outside.

Generally started getting plot ready for winter.

 

Blackberry bushes need pruning and stakes need replacing.

Shed needs retreating.

Patio needs weeding.

Edges need strimming.

Polytunnel needs clearing and tidying.

Pots and trays need cleaning.
