Maths Time
Let's start today's Maths activity by telling a grown up which superhero is heaviest, in the pictures below.
Remember, the heavier object, makes the scales go down.
Super! Today, at Maths Time, we are going to continue solving problems, using our doubling brains to help us. We have solved the first problem for you.
At lunch time, Miss Dodgson ate 2 cookies. Mr Kirkbride ate double this amount. How many cookies did Mr Kirkbride eat?
First, we look for the number in the problem, and draw this amount of objects.
So, we will need to draw 2 cookies, like this:
Next, we need to double this amount. Remember, double means same/same - we add the same amount. So, we need to draw 2 more cookies, like this:
Then, we count how many cookies there are altogether, using our pointy finger.
So, 1, 2, 3, 4, - Mr Kirkbride ate 4 cookies. The doubling sum would be 2+2=4.
Now, its your turn, don't forget to write the sum for each problem!
1. In the football match, Joe scored 3 goals. Tom scored double this amount. How many did Tom score?
2. David found 5 pennies outside. His sister found double this amount. How many pennies did she find?
3. There were 6 bananas in the fruit bowl, but now, there are double. How many bananas are there?
4. Granny is making apple pie. She has 7 apples, but she needs double this amount. How many apples does Granny need?
Tremendous doubling!
Today's story is called 'Owl Babies.' Sarah, Percy and Bill live in a nice warm tree with their Mother Owl. Until one morning they wake up and... Mother Owl isn't there. They are not sure where she could be, and they really want to know when she will be back. To read today's fantastic story click on the link below.
