In Early Years, mathematics is woven through play, routines and meaningful exploration. When visitors step into our setting, they will see children building the foundations of number, shape, pattern, and measure in ways that reflect Development Matters.
Counting through play — children using real objects to count, compare quantities and solve simple problems.
Exploring shape and space — building with blocks, creating models and describing what they notice.
Using maths in daily routines — tidying by matching, sharing snacks fairly, or noticing “more” and “fewer”.
Investigating measure — pouring in the water tray, comparing heights in construction, or timing how long things take.
These experiences link directly to Development Matters statements such as:
“Counts in everyday contexts.”
“Begins to describe a sequence of events.”
“Talks about and explores 2D and 3D shapes.”
“Uses language of size, weight, capacity and time.”
