PHONICS

Experience shows that children benefit hugely by exposure to books from an early age.

Right from the start, lots of opportunities should be provided for children to engage

with books that fire their imagination and interest. They should be encouraged to

choose and peruse books freely as well as sharing them when read by an adult.

Enjoying and sharing books leads to children seeing them as a source of pleasure

and interest and motivates them to value reading.

At Lawrence Community Primary school we use 'Read, Write Inc' to teach phonics across the phrases.

Read Write Inc. Phonics teaches children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.

Relentless enthusiasm in all sessions is key!

We have recently trained our upper Key stage 2 staff to deliver 'Fresh Start' sessions for those children that have gaps in their phonic knowledge.

Read Write Inc. Fresh Start teaches students to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. It teaches them to spell correctly and compose their ideas for writing step-by-step.

Students learn the English alphabetic code: the 150+ graphemes that represent 44 speech sounds.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively stories and non-fiction texts are both age appropriate and closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and as students re-read the texts, their fluency increases.
