Phonics

We are teaching children to listen carefully to sounds they can hear in their environment.

This will prepare children to listen carefully to hear sounds in words later when learning to spell and write.

Have a walk around your house listening for different sounds/ noises in each room. Can you hear the fridge humming? phone ringing? clock ticking? Does the kettle click on/off? Listen to the water gushing/ dripping from the tap.

Try recording some sounds of your home on your phone and play them to your child later, or tomorrow, to see if they can recognise them.

Environmental Sounds Inside Sounds

Another good activity to try is to open the window and listen for sounds outside: can you hear a car? an aeroplane? a dog barking? people walking past? children shouting?
