Talk/ Write Activity

We will be talking to children about the sunny weather and activities they have been doing whilst at home (recount) or places they would like to go when off school during the summer holidays.

Children will suggest an idea/ sentence for writing.

  • Children could try their own writing independently.
  • Children with good pencil control could copy below the adult's writing.
  • For younger children who are reluctant to write or those whose fingers are not physically ready to write letters, the adult can write for the child. (Children can practice pencil hold/ control drawing lines/ shapes on large paper later).

Phonics

Children have been learning the names of the pictures to help with letter recognition.

Look at the slide show below: can your child name the pictures shown?

(If they are struggling, look back at last weeks activities to practice those pictures/ letters).

Talk to your child and name the pictures below:

(Warning - if your child is struggling to remember previous pictures, DO NOT continue introducing more pictures/ letters as this will add to their confusion).

Listening for sounds in words

Game 1

You could play 'I spy':

  • using a selection of 6 different objects, each beginning with a different sound (eg, hat, cup, sock, doll, fork, wheel)
  • using objects that can be sorted into 2 groups as they begin with either of 2 sounds eg. 'c' objects could be cat, cup, carrot, and 's' objects could be sock, spoon, snake.

Game 2

You could play blending the sounds together in 'Fred Talk/ Say the word':

  • Show children a selection of clothing. Fred wants a ....'h-----a------t',........'h--a--t', ......'hat'.  Fred wants a ....'v-----e----s-----t', ........... 'v--e--s--t', ...........'vest'.

         Fred wants a ....'s-----o----k', ........... 's--o--k', ..............'sock'.

  • Show children a selection of food. Fred wants an ....'e-----g',........'e-------g', .........'egg'.     Fred wants a ....'b-----r----e-----d', ........... 'b--r--e--d', ...........'bread'.

          Fred wants a ....'m-----i-----l----k', ........... 'm--i----l---k', ..............'milk'.

  • Show children a selection of toys. Fred wants a ....'c-----o------r',........'c--o--r', ......'car'.       Fred wants a ....'b-----u----k', ........... 'b---u---k', ...........'book'.                                                Fred wants a ....'d-----o----l', ........... 'd--o--l', ..............'doll'.
