Helping children to listen carefully and distinguish between the sounds they hear, will help them to identify the individual sounds of letters when they are learning phonics.

  • Go outside, stand still and listen for sounds in the environment. Ask your child, "What can you hear?"
  • Go for a walk around your house and listen carefully for different sounds- can you hear the fridge? the clock? the doorbell? water filling the bath? washing machine? kettle?
